Your 2-Day Kota Bharu Self-Drive Itinerary: Royal Museums, Pantai Cahaya Bulan, and the Night Markets of Kelantan

Your 2-Day Kota Bharu Self-Drive Itinerary: Royal Museums, Pantai Cahaya Bulan, and the Night Markets of Kelantan
อัปเดตล่าสุด: 26 กันยายน 2026

Most guides to Kota Bharu hand you a list of places and leave you to figure out the order. This one does something different: it gives you a practical two-day plan built around a rental car, sequenced so you hit each spot at the right time of day, avoid backtracking, and actually get to sit down for a proper Kelantanese meal between stops rather than eating on the run. Whether you are flying into Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, arriving on the Jungle Railway at Wakaf Bharu KTM Station, or stepping off an overnight coach at Kota Bharu Bus Terminal, MT Car Rentals has pickup points at all three — collect your car on arrival and you are ready to go. Economy cars start from RM90/day (Perodua Viva), with Myvi and Axia options from RM100–RM110/day if you want something a little newer.

Day 1 Morning: The Royal Heritage Quarter (8am–11am)

Kota Bharu's greatest concentration of history sits within a compact loop of streets near Padang Merdeka, and it rewards an early start before the midday heat sets in. Begin at Istana Jahar, the oldest surviving royal palace in Kelantan, built in 1887 and now home to the Royal Customs Museum. The dark timber architecture is extraordinary — carved panels, layered rooflines, and a ground-floor collection of royal regalia, ceremonial weapons, and traditional costumes that tells the story of the Kelantanese court across several centuries. Admission is a few ringgit and the palace is rarely crowded before 10am.

A five-minute drive takes you to Istana Batu (the Royal Museum), a pale blue 1930s palace that served as the official royal residence until 1960. Inside, the rooms remain largely as they were furnished during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim — glass cabinets of royal gifts, formal dining rooms, and photographs documenting a century of Kelantanese royal life. The contrast between the traditional timber Istana Jahar and the European-influenced Istana Batu, separated by barely 500 metres, is one of the quietly striking things you will see in the state.

Complete the royal circuit at Balai Getam Guri, the Handicraft Museum, housed in another beautifully restored traditional structure nearby. Artisans here demonstrate batik painting, silversmithing, and traditional kite-making — craft traditions that have defined Kelantan for generations. Allow two to two-and-a-half hours for the full royal heritage loop, including driving time between sites.

Day 1 Afternoon: Lunch, the Central Market, and an Easy Afternoon

By midday you will have earned a proper Kelantanese meal. The area around Padang Merdeka has several good options for nasi kerabu — the blue-tinted rice dish served with fresh herbs, salted egg, and a choice of grilled chicken or fried fish that is as Kelantanese as it gets. Pair it with air bandung or fresh coconut water and you have a lunch that costs next to nothing and fuels the afternoon ahead.

After lunch, park near Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah and spend an hour exploring the ground floor, where rows of market traders — almost entirely women — sell batik sarongs, keropok, traditional kuih, and fresh produce in a riot of colour that has earned the market its place on every Kelantan highlight reel. The upper floors are quieter and good for browsing traditional textiles without the bustle. This is a daytime market, so aim to arrive between 1pm and 3pm for the best atmosphere.

Day 1 Evening: The Malam Bazaar Buluh Kubu

As the sun drops, make your way to Malam Bazaar Buluh Kubu, the famous night market that sets up near the central bus terminal from around 5pm and runs until the stalls sell out — typically between 9pm and 10pm. This is not a tourist market; it is where Kota Bharu residents eat dinner, and the variety is remarkable: ayam percik (marinated grilled chicken basted with coconut milk sauce), laksam, nasi dagang, sata, and an astonishing array of kuih that you will not find anywhere else in the country. Budget RM15–25 per person for a full spread and you will leave uncomfortably full in the best possible way. Having a car parked nearby makes the evening straightforward — load up any market groceries and drive back to your accommodation without negotiating a taxi.

Day 2: Pantai Cahaya Bulan and the Drive North

Save the coast for day two, and aim to reach Pantai Cahaya Bulan (Beach of Moonlight) before 9am — the drive from Kota Bharu city centre takes roughly 15 minutes heading north, and the beach is at its best in the early morning when the light is low and the sand is still cool underfoot. Despite its evocative name (it was known as Pantai Cinta Berahi, Beach of Passionate Love, before a more conservative government renamed it in the 1990s), PCB is a long, gently curving stretch of dark sand backed by casuarina trees — calm, uncrowded in the mornings, and well suited to a slow breakfast walk before the day warms up. Modest swimwear is the norm here.

From PCB, the road continues north through the coastal villages of Tumpat district toward the Thai border. This is one of the most culturally distinct corners of Malaysia — Buddhist temples sit a few kilometres from traditional Kelantanese wooden houses, and the Wat Phothivihan temple in Tumpat contains one of the largest reclining Buddha statues in Southeast Asia at 40 metres. It is worth factoring in if you have a full day. The Tumpat KTM Station nearby is the terminus of the Jungle Railway line — a useful piece of trivia if any of your group is travelling onwards by rail.

On the return leg, a stop at Kampung Kraftangan (the Craft Village) on the outskirts of Kota Bharu lets you see traditional Kelantanese crafts in a working context — weavers producing songket and tenun, and kite-makers shaping the giant Wau Bulan kites that have become the unofficial symbol of Kelantan. It is a low-key, unhurried stop that works well as a mid-afternoon wind-down before you return the car.

Which Car to Book for a Kota Bharu Trip?

For a city-and-coast itinerary like this, an economy sedan or hatchback is all you need — roads in the Kota Bharu area are flat, well-surfaced, and easy to navigate. The Perodua Viva is the most affordable option at RM90/day, ideal for solo travellers or couples who want to keep costs low. The Perodua Myvi and Perodua Axia (from RM100–RM110/day) offer slightly more modern cabins and are a popular choice for small families. If you are travelling with a group of five or six, the Perodua Alza 2nd Generation steps up to a 7-seat MPV from around RM220/day and handles the group's luggage without any compromises. For those who want to arrive in style — perhaps for a family celebration or a special occasion — the Toyota Vellfire AGH30 is available from RM710/day and the Toyota Alphard (self-drive) from RM900/day. There is even a Proton e.MAS 7 electric SUV listed from RM450/day if you want to explore Kelantan's back roads with zero tailpipe emissions.

Where to Collect Your Car

Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (Kota Bharu Airport) is the most convenient pickup point if you are flying in — operators meet you in the arrivals area, so you can be on the road within minutes of landing. If you are arriving by train on the Jungle Railway, Wakaf Bharu KTM Station is the rail gateway to Kota Bharu and has operators available for collection. Long-distance coach passengers can collect from Kota Bharu Bus Terminal, which is well positioned for heading directly into the city centre. All three pickup points are listed on MT Car Rentals — select your preferred location when you book and the operator will be ready for you on arrival.
