Perodua Bezza vs Toyota Vios vs Nissan Almera vs Proton Saga: Which Budget Sedan Should You Rent in Malaysia?

Perodua Bezza vs Toyota Vios vs Nissan Almera vs Proton Saga: Which Budget Sedan Should You Rent in Malaysia?
อัปเดตล่าสุด: August 5, 2026 AD

Booking a budget sedan for your Malaysia road trip sounds simple enough — until you're staring at four very different options and wondering whether to go with the crowd favourite Perodua Bezza, the reliable Toyota Vios, the surprisingly punchy Nissan Almera Turbo, or the evergreen Proton Saga. All four are compact, fuel-efficient, and widely available on the platform — but they're not interchangeable. Pricing, regional availability, cabin space, and driving feel differ meaningfully between them. This guide breaks it all down so you can pick the right one for your trip and budget.

Perodua Bezza — Malaysia's Most Widely Available Rental Sedan

If sheer availability is your priority, the Perodua Bezza wins outright. It is the most heavily listed sedan on MT Car Rentals, with units spread across virtually every region in the country — from Langkawi and Penang to Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Kota Bharu, and Kuala Terengganu. Wherever you land, there is almost certainly a Bezza waiting for you.

Pricing reflects that abundance. In Langkawi, Bezza listings start from as low as RM70/day — ideal if you're spending a few lazy days island-hopping on a tight budget. In Kota Bharu, you can find units from RM100/day. Johor Bahru starts from RM110/day, with Kota Kinabalu and Kuching from RM115–130/day. On the peninsula, expect to pay from RM130/day in Penang, from RM135/day in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, from RM140/day in Ipoh, and from RM145/day in Melaka. Kuala Terengganu opens from around RM155/day and Kuantan from RM170/day.

The Bezza is a 1.0 or 1.3-litre subcompact sedan — comfortable for two or three adults, adequate for four, and best suited to urban driving and shorter highway runs. Its boot is modest but workable for weekend bags. Newer 2023–2025 units offer a tidier interior and noticeably better refinement than earlier models. If you're renting for daily errands, airport transfers, or a compact family trip within one region, the Bezza is the safest bet for availability and price across the country.

Proton Saga — The Cheapest Entry Point on the Mainland

The Proton Saga is the budget king on the Malaysian mainland, consistently undercutting the Bezza in direct price comparisons within the same city. In Kuala Lumpur, Sagas start from RM105/day — compared to RM135/day for the Bezza in the same region. In Johor Bahru you can find Saga listings from RM90/day. Penang starts from RM100/day, Kota Bharu from RM100/day, Ipoh and Melaka from RM130/day, and Kota Kinabalu from RM120/day. In Langkawi and Kuching, Sagas compete directly with the Bezza from RM70–80/day — among the lowest sedan rates on the entire platform.

The current third-generation Proton Saga (2019 onwards) runs a 1.3-litre VVT engine paired with a CVT gearbox, which makes highway cruising noticeably smoother than the outgoing model. It seats five comfortably, offers a slightly more generous boot than the Bezza, and comes with a conventional three-box sedan silhouette that many drivers find easier to judge in traffic. The Premium S and higher-spec variants add cruise control and a larger infotainment screen, making them genuinely competitive in terms of features for the price.

The Saga's main limitation is regional spread — while it is well-represented in the major cities and Langkawi, it is not as ubiquitous as the Bezza in East Malaysia and smaller towns. If your first priority is price on the mainland, however, the Saga routinely delivers the best value of the four.

Nissan Almera Turbo — The Performance Pick in the Budget Class

The Nissan Almera occupies a split personality on the platform. Older N17 units (pre-2020) are conventional naturally-aspirated sedans priced in line with the Saga and Bezza — you'll find N17 listings from RM165/day in Johor Bahru and from RM180/day in Kuala Lumpur. These are perfectly adequate but unremarkable cars. The story changes completely with the N18 generation (2020 onwards), which introduced a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 100 hp — a meaningful step up in punch for a car in this class.

The N18 Turbo is most heavily concentrated in Langkawi, where you'll find Almera Turbo listings from RM100/day, making it genuinely competitive against the naturally-aspirated alternatives. In Johor Bahru, N18 (new model) units are priced from RM300/day, which is a significant premium over the Bezza and Saga in the same region. Penang has a listing from RM250/day. The Almera Turbo offers a noticeably more responsive driving experience, a roomier rear cabin compared to the Bezza, and a larger boot — one of the more practical choices in the segment for families or travellers with bulkier luggage.

Where the Almera makes most sense is Langkawi, where the turbo-model pricing is competitive and the island's mixed terrain — flat town stretches, rolling hillside roads up to the cable car — suits the engine's character. Elsewhere, if you want Almera Turbo performance, be prepared to pay a meaningful premium over the Bezza and Saga. It's worth it if driving feel matters to you; it may not be if you're purely cost-optimising.

Toyota Vios — The Premium Compact Sedan

The Toyota Vios sits at the top end of this comparison in almost every region, and deliberately so. It is a larger, more polished car than the Bezza or Saga, with a more refined 1.5-litre engine, a quieter highway cabin, and a reputation for reliability that has made it a long-running favourite among Malaysian families and business travellers alike. On MT Car Rentals, the Vios is available across the country — but pricing reflects its positioning above the other three cars in this comparison.

In Langkawi, you can find Vios listings from RM75/day for older units, which makes it one of the more accessible options on the island. In Kuching, Vios listings start from RM110/day. From there, prices climb steadily: Johor Bahru from RM170/day, Kota Bharu from RM180/day, Penang from RM180/day, Kuala Lumpur from RM200/day, and Kota Kinabalu from RM250/day. The 4th Generation Vios (2023 onwards), which features Toyota Safety Sense driver-assist technology as standard, commands higher rates still in most regions.

The Vios is the right choice if you value a larger, quieter cabin, more confident highway dynamics, and a strong brand reputation. It is also a clear step up in interior quality over the Bezza and Saga. What you give up is price competitiveness — in most regions, the Vios costs noticeably more per day than the other three options. If you're doing a long highway run, transporting four adults, or simply want a more premium feel without stepping up to an SUV, the Vios justifies the premium.

Which One Should You Book?

Here's the quick-decision guide: pick the Proton Saga if price is everything and you're on the mainland — it consistently offers the lowest rates. Pick the Perodua Bezza if you want the widest selection and the best availability across all regions, including East Malaysia. Pick the Nissan Almera Turbo if you're heading to Langkawi and want a more spirited drive without a major price penalty, or if you need a roomier rear cabin and larger boot. Pick the Toyota Vios if you want the most refined, quiet, and feature-rich experience and are prepared to pay a modest premium for it.

All four are available to browse and compare right now on MT Car Rentals. Filter by your pickup location, travel dates, and car type to see which models and operators are available in your region — you'll often find multiple options at different price points within the same area.
