Renting an Electric Car in Malaysia: Proton e.MAS 7, Charging, Range and Where to Find One

Renting an Electric Car in Malaysia: Proton e.MAS 7, Charging, Range and Where to Find One
Last Updated: October 20, 2026

The Proton e.MAS 7 is Malaysia's homegrown electric SUV, and it is one of the few fully electric cars you can rent for a few days without committing to a purchase. If you are curious about EV life, or simply want a quiet, smooth ride for an East Coast trip, it is a fascinating option. An electric rental works a little differently from a petrol car, so here is a practical look at what the e.MAS 7 offers, how range and charging play out on a rental, and exactly where to find one on MT Car Rentals.

Where You Can Rent a Proton e.MAS 7

As of October 2026, the e.MAS 7 is listed in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. There are two listings, both 5-seaters with luggage space for 5 pieces according to the model details:

  • Proton e.MAS 7 from RM450/day with a RM200 deposit and a 400km mileage cap for the rental. Pick-up points include Kota Bharu Airport, Wakaf Bharu KTM Station and Kota Bharu Bus Terminal.
  • Proton e.MAS 7 from RM500/day with zero deposit and no mileage cap stated. This listing has a wider list of pick-up points, including Kota Bharu Airport, Kota Bharu Bus Terminal, Wakaf Bharu KTM Station and several hotels in the city.

Availability changes by date, so search your dates on the website to see what is open. At the time of writing we do not see e.MAS 7 listings in other regions such as Klang Valley, Penang or Johor Bahru, so Kota Bharu is the place to look.

Range: What to Expect on a Rental

Manufacturer range figures for electric cars are usually measured under lab test cycles, which tend to be more generous than everyday driving. Highway speeds, air-conditioning, passengers and luggage all reduce real-world range. Plan your day around comfortably less than the headline number and treat the claimed figure as a best case.

For a Kota Bharu trip, this is rarely a problem. Typical outings, such as the city centre, Pantai Cahaya Bulan, Rantau Panjang or a drive up to Tumpat, are short. A day of sightseeing in the Kota Bharu area usually uses only a fraction of a full battery.

Note the 400km cap on the RM450/day listing. Mileage caps are per rental, for the entire rental duration unless otherwise specified, so a three-day trip shares that 400km across all three days. Check the listing's Important Notes before you book.

Charging: Full Charge Included, and Planning Ahead

The most useful detail in the RM450/day listing is the operator's note that the price includes a fully charged car, so you do not need to charge it. That takes a lot of the worry out of a first EV experience. A few habits help whichever listing you choose:

  • Ask the operator after booking about the battery level at hand-over and where they recommend charging.
  • Use your hotel's parking if it offers charging, or look for public chargers on a map app before you set off. Public charger coverage on the East Coast is thinner than in the Klang Valley.
  • Do not wait until the battery is nearly empty. Start looking for a charger at roughly a quarter charge.
  • Ask the operator what charge level they expect on return.

Charging fees and return charge requirements are set by the operator, so read the Important Notes section on the listing carefully.

Tips for Your First EV Rental

EVs deliver power instantly and brake with regenerative drag, so the first few minutes feel different. Take a moment at hand-over to learn the drive modes, the charge port location and how to lock and unlock the car. Our service is area-based, so you may return the car to any location within the same area as your pick-up, such as Kota Bharu Airport to Wakaf Bharu KTM Station.

Also remember that the exact unit is assigned at pick-up, and bring a valid driving licence. ASEAN-issued licences are accepted on their own, while other licences need an International Driving Permit. Probationary licences are not accepted.

Best Time to Go

East Coast trips are at their best from March to October, when the weather is generally favourable. The northeast monsoon runs from November to February and brings heavy rain to Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, so allow extra time and take care on wet roads if you travel then.

Ready to Try an Electric Rental?

If you want to experience Malaysian-made electric motoring, the Proton e.MAS 7 in Kota Bharu is a straightforward place to start. Compare the RM450/day listing with its full-charge convenience against the RM500/day zero-deposit option, pick your dates, and book directly at mtcarrentals.com.
