Renting a Car in Ipoh: Family Self-Drive Guide to Perak's Heritage City

Renting a Car in Ipoh: Family Self-Drive Guide to Perak's Heritage City
Terakhir Diperbarui: 30 September 2026

Ipoh has long been celebrated as a food lover's destination, but families travelling with children often discover something even better: the Kinta Valley is essentially one giant outdoor adventure playground. Within a 30-kilometre radius of the city centre, you'll find one of Malaysia's most thrilling water parks, a genuinely mysterious ruined Scottish castle, ancient limestone cave temples, and a heritage Old Town where a bowl of white coffee and a plate of bean sprout chicken makes an excellent mid-afternoon pit stop. The only way to do all of this without spending half your holiday waiting for ride-hailing cars is to hire a rental car in Ipoh and go at your own pace.

Picking Up Your Rental Car in Ipoh

MT Car Rentals has two main pick-up points in the Ipoh area: Sultan Azlan Shah Airport and Ipoh KTM/ETS Station. Both are well-served by operators and suit different arrival styles. If you're flying in from KL or Penang, the airport is the obvious choice — it's compact and the handover process is quick. If you're taking the ETS train from KL Sentral (roughly two hours and a smooth, comfortable ride), the station pick-up puts you right in the heart of the city.

On pricing, the Ipoh fleet is one of the most varied on the platform. Economy cars start from RM110/day for a Perodua Axia, and the Proton Saga and Perodua Bezza both start from around RM130–140/day — solid choices for couples or small families travelling light. The Perodua Myvi and Honda City sit in the RM150–180/day range, offering a little more comfort for the same money. If you're travelling with children and luggage, the Perodua Alza (1st Gen) starts from RM200/day, while the newer Alza 2nd Generation and Perodua Aruz start from RM250/day — both are seven-seaters with proper boot space. Step up to the Honda HR-V from RM280/day or the Proton X50 from RM350/day if you want a crossover with a bit more road presence. For larger groups, the Mitsubishi Xpander Plus (RM380/day) and Hyundai Staria Max (RM700/day) are excellent high-capacity options, and the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire (AGH30, both from RM650/day) are available for those who want to arrive at Kellie's Castle in some style.

Day One: Lost World of Tambun and the Kinta Valley's Star Attraction

If you're travelling with children, Lost World of Tambun deserves a full day, not a half-day. The water theme park section — with its wave pool, water slides, and toddler-friendly splash zones — can easily fill six hours, and that's before you factor in the amusement park, the petting zoo, the pony rides, and the hot springs section that the adults in the group will quietly love. The park sits about 15 minutes' drive from central Ipoh, making it an easy first stop on the day you arrive: pick up your rental car, throw your bags into the boot, and head straight there.

Plan to arrive when the gates open. Weekends and school holidays bring large crowds, particularly at the water slides. Early birds get the best run of the wave pool before the queues build. Pack a change of dry clothes for the kids in an accessible bag rather than deep in the car boot — you'll thank yourself at 4pm. After the park, the Tambun area has several good seafood restaurants along the main road that are well-suited to tired, hungry families.

Day Two: Kellie's Castle, Cave Temples, and a Heritage Town Wander

The second day is where the road trip element really comes into its own, because the attractions are spread out in a loop south and around Ipoh that would be impractical without a car.

Kellie's Castle unfinished Edwardian mansion ruin Batu Gajah Perak Malaysia

Kellie's Castle in Batu Gajah is an irresistible stop for families. The unfinished Edwardian-era mansion was begun by Scottish rubber planter William Kellie Smith in the early 1900s and never completed after his sudden death — leaving behind a multi-storey ruin full of roofless rooms, secret passages, underground tunnels, and a rooftop Hindu shrine that's as surprising as it sounds. Children find the place genuinely atmospheric in the best possible way. It's about 25 kilometres south of Ipoh, an easy 30-minute drive. Admission is modest and parking is straightforward.

Sam Poh Tong, on the southern outskirts of Ipoh, is one of the largest cave temples in Malaysia and one of the most accessible for families. A natural cavern carved into a limestone hill, it houses an 11-metre reclining Buddha, ponds of tortoises, and a garden courtyard that children roam freely. Admission is free. The drive back into central Ipoh from here takes only about 10 minutes — which puts you in the Old Town in time for a late lunch.

Ipoh Old Town is where you eat. The white coffee here is not a marketing gimmick — it genuinely tastes different from anything you'll find in KL or Penang, roasted with palm oil margarine and served in thick ceramic mugs at kopitiam counters that have been in business for decades. Order a plate of bean sprout chicken and a portion of salted egg tofu alongside it. After lunch, the Mural Art Trail along Jalan Panglima and the surrounding streets provides an easy, shaded walk that keeps younger children entertained while adults browse the antique shops and heritage architecture.

Practical Notes for the Drive

Ipoh's road network is easy to navigate by self-drive standards. The North-South Expressway connects the city to KL and Penang, and most of the attractions covered in this guide are reachable via well-maintained federal roads without any need for mountain passes or unsealed tracks. Parking in the Old Town can be tight on weekend mornings — arrive before 10am or use the multi-storey car parks near Ipoh Parade shopping centre. Petrol stations are plentiful throughout the Kinta Valley. If you're planning to drive out to Kellie's Castle and Sam Poh Tong in one loop, allow a full morning; both sites warrant at least an hour each.

For families doing three or more days, consider adding a half-day trip to the Gua Tempurung cave system in Gopeng (about 30 kilometres south) — one of the largest dry caves in Peninsular Malaysia, with guided adventure tours that teenagers in particular tend to enjoy. The drive from central Ipoh takes under 40 minutes.
