KLIA Terminal 1 vs KLIA Terminal 2: Which Airport Are You Flying Into, and How to Pick Up Your Rental Car at Each

KLIA Terminal 1 vs KLIA Terminal 2: Which Airport Are You Flying Into, and How to Pick Up Your Rental Car at Each
Terakhir Diperbarui: 22 September 2026

You've cleared customs, grabbed your bags, and you're ready to go — but before your Malaysian adventure truly begins, there's one question that trips up more travellers than you'd expect: which terminal did you actually land at? Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are two entirely separate buildings, several kilometres apart, served by different rail lines and different pickup zones. Get this wrong and you could be hunting for your rental car operator in completely the wrong part of the airport. Get it right, and you can be on the highway with the wind at your back in under an hour. Here's your no-fuss guide — which terminal is which, who flies where, and what your rental car can take you to once you're behind the wheel.

KLIA Terminal 1 vs KLIA Terminal 2: Know Before You Land

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 is Malaysia's primary international gateway, recognised by its sweeping forest-inspired architecture and vast central atrium. If you're flying in on Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia X, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Thai Airways, or virtually any full-service international carrier, Terminal 1 is where you'll arrive. It's directly connected to KL Sentral in the city centre via the non-stop KLIA Ekspres train — a 28-minute journey with no changes required.

KLIA Terminal 2 — purpose-built for low-cost operations — handles AirAsia's entire domestic and short-haul international network, as well as Batik Air Malaysia and several other regional carriers. It's physically integrated with Gateway@KLIA2, a shopping mall built directly into the terminal building. The two terminals are linked by the KLIA Transit rail service (approximately 3 minutes between stops), but they are not within walking distance of each other. If you mix them up and need to switch after landing, budget at least 30–45 minutes including the train journey and queuing.

The simplest check: open your flight confirmation email and look for the terminal designation. AirAsia flights almost always mean Terminal 2. Everything else is almost certainly Terminal 1. When in doubt, verify on the Malaysia Airports (MAHB) website or your airline's app before you fly.

How Rental Car Pickup Works at KLIA — Both Terminals

All rental car bookings through MT Car Rentals at KLIA — whether Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 — operate on a meet-and-greet basis. There are no counters to queue at, no shuttle buses to wait for. Instead, your operator will contact you approximately 48 hours before your scheduled pickup to confirm handover details and coordinate a meeting point, typically in or near the arrivals hall.

When booking, make sure to select the correct terminal as your pickup location: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 or Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2. Operators on the MT Car Rentals platform serve both terminals, so your choice of vehicle is not affected by which building you land at. If your flight is delayed or your arrival time changes, simply email MT Car Rentals with your updated arrival time and the pickup schedule can be adjusted accordingly — no need to panic.

For the return leg, the area-based model applies: you may return your car to any listed location within the Klang Valley region, including either KLIA terminal, KL Sentral, Putrajaya, or other listed points in the area. You are not locked to returning at the exact terminal where you picked up.

What to Bring: Driving Licences and Documents

Before you collect your keys, make sure your documents are in order. Malaysian and other ASEAN-issued driving licences (including Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines) are accepted on their own — no International Driving Permit (IDP) required. If your licence was issued outside ASEAN — for example, a UK, Indian, Chinese, or Australian licence — you must also carry a valid IDP alongside it. This is a firm requirement, not a suggestion. Operators at KLIA are experienced with international travellers and will check your documents at handover.

You'll also need your booking confirmation (an email or screenshot works fine), your passport or NRIC for identity verification, and your credit or debit card if a security deposit is being collected at pickup. Cash deposits are always accepted as legal tender even if not explicitly listed in the operator's terms.

Choosing the Right Car at KLIA

With dozens of published listings across both KLIA terminals, there's a vehicle for every travel style and budget. Here's a snapshot of what's available at day-one rates on the platform:

  • Economy (Perodua Axia, Perodua Myvi) — from RM100/day. Perfect for solo travellers or couples hopping between KL and nearby day-trip destinations like Putrajaya or Kuala Selangor.
  • Sedan (Proton Saga) — from RM105/day. A step up in comfort for longer highway runs, still very easy on the wallet.
  • MPV (Toyota Innova) — from RM240/day. Excellent choice for families or groups of up to seven, with genuine luggage space to match. The Innova is widely regarded as the best practical MPV on the platform for large groups.
  • Premium MPV (Toyota Vellfire) — from RM400/day. When you want to arrive somewhere feeling like you mean it.
  • Luxury MPV (Toyota Alphard) — from RM600/day. The benchmark for executive travel in Malaysia, with self-drive options available throughout the Klang Valley. Note that some Alphard listings are with-driver arrangements — always check the listing details when booking.
  • SUV (Perodua Aruz, Proton X70) — from RM200/day and RM500/day respectively. Great if you're heading up-country or need higher ground clearance for rural roads.

Rates are per day and reflect the lowest available first-day rate from published self-drive listings at KLIA. Multi-day rentals often attract lower per-day rates, so it pays to book your full intended duration upfront rather than extending day by day.

Driving Out of KLIA: Where Can You Go?

Once you're behind the wheel, the whole of Peninsular Malaysia is within reach. From KLIA, the PLUS North-South Expressway feeds directly into KL city (roughly 45–60 minutes to the centre, traffic permitting) and continues north all the way to Penang or south towards Johor Bahru. The East Coast Expressway branches off at Gambang and takes you towards Kuantan, Terengganu, and Kelantan. Heading to Port Dickson for a beach escape? That's under an hour from the airport on the LEKAS highway.

One important note on geography: MT Car Rentals operates on an area-based model. This means you may return your car to any location within the Klang Valley area — KLIA Terminal 1, KLIA Terminal 2, KL Sentral, Putrajaya Sentral, and many more listed points — but not to a location in a different region such as Penang or Johor Bahru. If you're planning a one-way inter-city trip, you'll need to make separate bookings for each region.

Whether you're landing at Terminal 1 after a long-haul flight or stepping off an AirAsia red-eye at Terminal 2, MT Car Rentals has you covered at both buildings with a wide selection of self-drive vehicles and a straightforward meet-and-greet pickup process.
