Renting a Car in Johor Bahru: Self-Drive Guide to Johor's Southern Gateway

Renting a Car in Johor Bahru: Self-Drive Guide to Johor's Southern Gateway
อัปเดตล่าสุด: 8 พฤศจิกายน 2026

Johor Bahru is the southern gateway to Malaysia, and it is also one of the easiest places in the country to start a road trip. Beaches, rainforest, river towns and the North-South Expressway are all within reach of the city. Public transport only gets you so far, so a rental car turns JB from a stopover into a launchpad. This guide covers where to collect your car, what it costs, and two day trips worth the drive: Desaru and Kota Tinggi.

Where to Pick Up Your Rental Car in Johor Bahru

MT Car Rentals operators in the JB area offer several pick-up points. These three are the most commonly available:

  • Senai Airport: the best choice if you are flying in. Collect the car and head straight onto the highway without going through the city. Some operators offer a meeting point in the arrival hall, so check the Meet & Greet section of your listing.
  • JB Sentral: the train and bus hub right beside the Causeway checkpoint. It suits travellers arriving by KTM, bus or on foot from Singapore.
  • Larkin Sentral: JB's main long-distance bus terminal, handy if you are arriving from elsewhere in Malaysia or want to avoid the busiest city-centre traffic.

Other locations exist too, such as Johor Bahru City Square and Stulang Laut Ferry Terminal. Availability differs by operator, so always confirm that your chosen listing serves your pick-up point before booking. AEON Tebrau, for example, is not offered by every operator.

Our service is area-based. You may return the car to any location within the Johor Bahru area, so collecting at Senai Airport and returning at JB Sentral is a valid arrangement. You cannot return it to a different area. Rental cars also cannot be driven into Singapore, so return the car before you cross the Causeway.

What a Car Costs in JB

JB is one of the most competitively priced rental markets on the platform. Current listings show these starting daily rates (they vary by date, operator and season):

  • Proton Saga and Perodua Axia: from about RM90 to RM120 a day, and many listings carry zero deposit.
  • Perodua Bezza and Myvi: from about RM110 to RM130 a day, with a little more room for luggage and passengers.
  • Toyota Vios and Honda City: from about RM170 a day if you want more comfort on longer drives.
  • Perodua Alza and Aruz (7-seaters): from about RM180 to RM220 a day for family trips.
  • Toyota Alphard: from about RM270 a day for big groups and airport-style comfort.

Deposits range from RM0 to a few hundred ringgit on most compact cars. Mileage rules differ by listing: many cars have unlimited mileage, while others set a cap per rental. If you plan a long day trip, check the cap first. Fuel policy is also set by each operator, so read it on the individual listing. Check the Important Notes section for any operator surcharges, such as late-night pick-up fees, before you confirm.

If you have not driven in a while, a small automatic such as an Axia or Saga is an easy way to ease back in. Malaysia drives on the left, the same as Singapore, and a Singapore licence is valid here without an International Driving Permit.

Day Trip 1: Desaru Coast

Desaru is the classic JB escape. From Senai Airport or the city it is roughly an hour's drive east, mostly on good expressway and trunk road. The long beaches, resort strip and quiet stretches of coast make it ideal for a Saturday out. Leave early, stop at a roadside stall for breakfast, and you can be on the sand by mid-morning.

A compact car is plenty for two to four people. For a group with beach gear, a Perodua Alza or Aruz gives you the boot space. Fill up in town before you go, and check whether your listing's mileage is unlimited, since the round trip adds up.

Day Trip 2: Kota Tinggi

Kota Tinggi sits north-east of JB, around an hour's drive. It is a good pick for a slower day: river scenery, local food and the waterfall area, which is best enjoyed outside heavy rain. Roads are straightforward, and having your own car lets you stop where you like instead of following a tour schedule.

Combine Kota Tinggi and Desaru into a longer weekend if you have time. Many JB cars come with unlimited mileage, which makes a loop like this stress-free. Beyond Johor, the North-South Expressway runs north from JB, so Melaka makes an easy weekend and the highlands are further up the road.

Tips for a Smooth Self-Drive in JB

  • Book early for weekends, school holidays and long weekends, when demand from Singapore and the rest of Malaysia rises.
  • Bring your driving licence and the passport or ID used for the booking.
  • Take photos of the car at pick-up and return, and note the fuel level.
  • Avoid the Causeway rush hours on Friday evening and Sunday evening when moving around the city.
  • Read the listing's Meet & Greet and Important Notes sections for pick-up details and any operator fees.

Ready to Drive?

Whether you land at Senai Airport, step off a train at JB Sentral or arrive by coach at Larkin Sentral, your car can be waiting. Browse self-drive listings in Johor Bahru on MT Car Rentals, compare operators and rates, and book your car for Desaru, Kota Tinggi or the open road beyond.
