Beyond the City: Exploring Kedah's Paddy Fields, Gunung Jerai, and Food Culture by Rental Car from Alor Setar

Beyond the City: Exploring Kedah's Paddy Fields, Gunung Jerai, and Food Culture by Rental Car from Alor Setar
อัปเดตล่าสุด: 9 ตุลาคม 2026

Every article about Alor Setar eventually reaches the same handful of stops: Masjid Zahir, Balai Besar, Pekan Rabu, and the road north to Thailand. They are all worth your time — but they are also all within walking distance of each other, and none of them require a car. The real reason to rent a vehicle in Alor Setar is to escape the city entirely: to drive into the paddy fields of the Kedah interior, climb the forest roads of Gunung Jerai, track down a bowl of laksa Kedah at a roadside stall that has been there for forty years, and return at your own pace without checking a bus timetable. Kedah is Malaysia's Rice Bowl, and the landscape that earns that name sprawls across a broad coastal plain that only reveals itself when you are moving through it at ground level.

Picking Up Your Car: Alor Setar Airport and KTM / ETS Station

MT Car Rentals has two principal collection points in the Alor Setar area: Alor Setar Airport (Sultan Abdul Halim Airport) and Alor Setar KTM / ETS Station, both confirmed in the platform's priority location list. If you are flying in from Kuala Lumpur on AirAsia, the airport collection is the most seamless start — your operator will coordinate the handover directly, and you can be on the road within minutes of landing. If you are arriving by ETS from KL Sentral (around three to four hours) or from Butterworth in Penang (under an hour), the station is equally convenient: step off the train, collect your keys, and the paddy plains are already visible from the car park.

Both locations fall within the same Alor Setar service area, so you can pick up at the airport and return at the station — or vice versa — without any cross-area penalty. The area also covers Kuala Kedah Jetty, Aman Central Mall, and Alor Setar Terminal Bus Shahab Perdana, giving you flexibility on your return point depending on where the day's drive ends. Your booking confirmation email will carry the operator's contact details for handover coordination closer to your pick-up date.

What's in the Fleet

The Alor Setar rental fleet is compact but covers everything you need for a countryside circuit. The most accessible option is the Perodua Bezza from RM160/day — fuel-efficient, comfortable on long straight highway stretches, and easy to park at the smaller stops along the way. A higher-specification Bezza variant is also listed at RM220/day for those who want upgraded features on a longer trip. Both carry a deposit of RM100. Families or groups of up to seven should consider the Toyota Voxy from RM500/day (deposit RM300), which handles the luggage and the leg room that a multi-day rural loop demands. At the premium end, the Toyota Alphard AGH30 is available from RM640/day self-drive (deposit RM500) — a genuine pleasure on the long, open roads of the Kedah plain. A with-driver Alphard is also listed at RM1,500/day for those who prefer to concentrate entirely on the scenery. Check current availability and book at mtcarrentals.com.

The Paddy Field Drive: Yan, Pendang, and the Heart of the Rice Bowl

Head south-east from Alor Setar on Route 1 or the smaller state roads and the city gives way almost immediately to one of the most photogenic agricultural landscapes in Southeast Asia. The districts of Yan and Pendang are deep in the double-cropping paddy zone — two harvests a year, which means the fields cycle between brilliant green shoots, heavy golden stalks, and the flat brown earth of the freshly cut season depending on when you visit. The roads through this area are quiet and straight, lined with wooden farmhouses and the occasional roadside stall selling raw rice by the sack. There is no single attraction to tick off here — the drive itself is the point. Pull over when the light is right, wind down the windows, and listen to nothing in particular. This is the Kedah that the guidebooks photograph from aeroplanes but rarely tell you how to reach by road.

From Yan, a short detour leads to the Yan Rock (Batu Hampar) viewpoint, a modest but rewarding stop that puts the full scale of the Kedah plain in perspective. On a clear morning, you can trace the flat patchwork of paddies all the way to the distant ridge of the Titiwangsa Range. The return leg through Guar Chempedak and back towards Alor Setar passes through a string of small market towns where breakfast stalls open before six and serve the kind of nasi lemak that never makes it onto a restaurant menu.

Gunung Jerai and Lembah Bujang

Gunung Jerai (1,217 m) is the dominant peak of the Kedah coastal plain and the only significant hill in the region — visible from as far away as Penang on a clear day. The access road climbs steeply through logged and secondary forest to a small resort area at the summit, where a meteorological station and a modest museum occupy the ridge. The drive up is the main event: tight switchbacks, dense canopy, and sudden clearings that reveal the entire patchwork of paddy fields below. A standard sedan handles the road comfortably. Allow around 45 minutes each way from the base, and check road conditions locally before you go, as the summit road occasionally closes after heavy rain.

At the foot of Gunung Jerai lies Lembah Bujang (the Bujang Valley), one of the oldest and most significant archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. Hindu-Buddhist temples and trading settlement remains dating back as far as the 4th century have been excavated here, representing the earliest evidence of an Indianised kingdom on the Malay Peninsula. The Muzium Arkeologi Lembah Bujang organises the finds well, and the reconstructed candi (temple) structures in the grounds give a tangible sense of the site's scale. Budget two hours minimum, and combine it with the Gunung Jerai drive for a full-day loop that covers archaeology, views, and paddy scenery in a single circuit.

The Kedah Food Loop: Laksa, Nasi Ulam, and the Sungai Petani Detour

Kedah food culture is distinct from the Penang versions that most visitors already know, and a rental car lets you chase the differences properly. Laksa Kedah is thicker and more intensely fishy than its Penang counterpart — the best versions are served from large aluminium pots at morning markets in small towns rather than in dedicated restaurants. The Sungai Petani corridor (about 45 minutes south of Alor Setar on the North-South Expressway) is the most rewarding food detour in the state: the town is large enough to have a strong hawker culture but small enough that the stalls have not yet adjusted their prices for tourists. Look also for nasi ulam served with fresh herbs from the paddy district, and pulut durian at roadside sellers during the durian season, which typically runs from June to August.

Cross-border driving note: vehicles rented through MT Car Rentals cannot be taken across the Thai border. If your itinerary includes Hatyai or Padang Besar, you are welcome to drive to the border town, park on the Malaysian side, and continue by foot or local transport. This applies to all listings on the platform regardless of how close to the border your pick-up location is.

Planning Your Route

A practical three-day circuit from Alor Setar works as follows: Day 1 — city stops (Masjid Zahir, Pekan Rabu, Muzium DiRaja Kedah) and an evening drive through the paddy fields north of town; Day 2 — Gunung Jerai and Lembah Bujang, with lunch at Merbok and a return via the coastal road; Day 3 — Sungai Petani food loop and a relaxed return to Alor Setar for the train or flight home. MT Car Rentals operates on an area-based model, so you can mix and match pick-up and return points freely within the Alor Setar service area — airport, KTM/ETS station, Aman Central Mall, and Kuala Kedah Jetty are all options.
