Toyota Avanza: The Langkawi Favourite with a Robust Reputation

The Toyota Avanza is a body-on-frame MPV with a slightly more SUV-like stance and a bit more ground clearance than the Alza or Exora. It has historically been one of the most popular rental vehicles in Southeast Asia for its durability and ease of maintenance. In Malaysia, the Avanza has been sold in 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre variants, and the third-generation model (launched 2022) brings meaningful improvements in cabin refinement and ride quality.

Where the Avanza really shines is Langkawi, where it is one of the most competitive budget seven-seaters available. Units start from as low as RM85/day, with most operators listing it in the RM100–120/day range — making it slightly cheaper than or comparable to the Alza on the island. For an island holiday where you'll be covering manageable distances, the Avanza is a smart pick. The slightly raised ride height is also useful on any rougher roads heading to waterfalls or beach resorts.

Outside Langkawi, the Avanza is less commonly listed. Penang has units from RM250/day, and in Johor Bahru newer-generation units are priced from RM400/day. Kota Kinabalu also has a listing from RM250/day. If your destination is not Langkawi, availability may be limited, so check current listings and consider the Alza as the more universally available alternative.

Proton Exora: The Spacious Underdog

The Proton Exora is often overlooked in favour of its Japanese-branded rivals, but it deserves a closer look — especially if interior space and cost-efficiency are your priorities. The Exora is a purpose-built MPV with a longer wheelbase than the Alza, which translates into noticeably more legroom in the second and third rows. It's powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine in its more recent Bold and Standard Turbo guises, and the cabin features three proper rows of seating without feeling cramped. For larger families with taller passengers, the Exora's cabin can actually be more comfortable than the Alza's on long hauls.
